Thursday, September 11, 2025 with Justin Cutler, Commissioner of Atlanta Parks and Recreation

September ThinkTank Topic:
Climate Resilience and the Human Body – Protecting Outdoor Workers on the Frontlines
Join us for a dynamic and timely online conversation exploring the intersection of climate resilience, human health, and the essential work of parks, recreation, and related quality of life professionals. As climate change accelerates, extreme weather—heat waves, poor air quality, intense storms—poses increasing risks to outdoor workers responsible for maintaining our vital green spaces.

This session will shine a spotlight on the unique challenges faced by maintenance teams and others who labor outdoors regardless of conditions. The online convening will feature a brief introduction to the topic, a facilitated group conversation, and the sharing of new insights from a 2024 uniform study conducted in partnership with the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and the City of Atlanta. The study highlights how uniform design, material selection, and workplace practices can better support worker health and comfort in the face of rising temperatures and climate extremes. We’ll explore key climate adaptation strategies and ask critical questions: What immediate changes can we implement to better protect our teams? What long-term solutions must we invest in now? And how can health, equity, and environmental stewardship align in the future?

Whether you're a parks leader, public health advocate, designer, researcher, frontline worker, or other allied colleague, this conversation will offer practical takeaways and inspiration for building a more resilient, people-centered approach to climate adaptation in public spaces.
